Flu Clue –
Bird Flu Support System
Designing access, agency, and communication for dairy farmers during outbreaks.
Team Includes; Funmi(me), Shimama, Tzu-Chi, Ean
Research Focus
This research investigates the systemic challenges faced by dairy farmers in the U.S. during the ongoing H5N1 bird flu outbreak, identifying breakdowns in communication, access to support, and testing information that weaken outbreak response and trust.
Key Research Questions
What structural barriers prevent dairy farmers from accessing real-time bird flu information and resources?
Who are the stakeholders?
How can government testing and aid programs be made more transparent and navigable?
What relationships exist between farmers, federal agencies, and state reps—and where are the disconnects?
In what ways can design build trust, empowerment, and mutual support among farmers?
How can we create a system that centers local knowledge while scaling national response?
Methodology
Stakeholder mapping to analyze influence, communication flow, and access gaps;
Size: Degree of influence
Line: Strength of relationship
1
System analysis of USDA, CDC, and state-level response programs
2
Opportunity Areas
3
Develop accessible, real-time communication between farmers and local representative which then pressure on them to assist, give emergency help.
4
Enable dairy farmers to access key local, state and federal contacts to advocate for program enrollment and increased funding support.
2
Connect dairy farmers for mutual support and provide access to financial assistance for mutual aid and recovery.
1
Empower dairy farmers with centralized, comprehensive information especially on USDA and CDC testing updates, to support informed decision-making and access to voluntary programs.
3
Recommendation
4
A Database website that combines all information from the national government agencies into a single location for better access
This shows information on the testing done and how farmers can request a testing, from CDC and USDA site, gathering both information in one database for farmers to access, and apply, this include groundwater, milk and diary cattle testing.
Testing
This shows local representative within a state in which diary farmers can contact for aid or for emergency purpose. Demand for the state to be enrolled in the voluntary testing programs OR for the federal reps to push for more money to be allocated to USDA to help farmers
Local Representative
Connect dairy farmers for mutual support and provide access to financial assistance for mutual aid and recovery.

Pain Points
Transparency
Access the database and was able to see information about the bird-flu, symptoms and real-time testing results
Trustworthiness
Access the testing data and explanation on what it means which motivate to also apply for farm animal testings.
Collaboration
Communication between farmers through the community platform on the site, this motivate farmers to share their predicament, findings and ask for help, which bridges collaboration.
Mutuality
Have access to diverse resources that educate and provides access to local representative which improves communication and data collection.
Empowerment
Sees programs that farmers can enroll , access to funds and grants available, also educate them on biosecurity and preventive measure, which empower the farmers to demand change on policies that could help
